Use of ‘The’
यदि
हम ‘The’ के शाब्दिक अर्थ की बात करें तो ‘The’ का अपना कोई अर्थ नहीं है
किन्तु अंग्रेजी में इसका प्रयोग इतना गूढ़ है कि इसके सही प्रयोगों का
ज्ञान होना SSC के छात्रों के लिए अति आवश्यक है क्योंकि परीक्षा में इस
पर आधरित प्रश्न प्राय पूछे जाते हैं। The के विभिन्न use निम्नलिखित है-
Rule -1
जब एक Noun को repeat किया जाता है तब ‘The’ का प्रयोग आवश्यक है जैसे-
(a) I found a purse on the road. The purse was full of money.
(b) Once there was a king in India. The king was kind and placid.
Rule -2
जब एक singular countable noun के द्वारा समूची जाति का बोध् कराया जाता है-
(a) The tiger is a majestic animal.
(b) The dolphin is an intelligent creature.
(c) The dog is a faithful animal.
Rule -3
नदियों के नामों से पहले जैसे-
The Ganga
The Yamuna
The Kaveri
The Sone
The Brahmaputra
Rule -4
समुद्र, महासागर, खाडि़यों के नामों से पहले जैसे-
The Red Sea
The Arabian Sea
The Pacific Ocean
The Indian Ocean
The Bay of Bengal
The Gulf of Mexico
*किन्तु Hudson Bay के साय ‘the’ निषेध् है।
Rule -5
द्वीपों (Islands group) के समूह व पर्वत-श्रृंखला (Mountain Ranges) के नाम से पहले जैसे-
The Nicobars
The Andamans
The Phillipihnes
The Alps
The Himalayas
The Aravallies
*किन्तु अकेले द्वीप व पर्वत चोटी के नाम से पहले ‘the’ नहीं लगाते। जैसे-
Ceylon,
Sicily,
Java Sumatra etc. (Name of Islands)
Mount Everest,
Nanda Devi etc. (Name of Peaks)
Rule -6
नहरों (Canals) तथा रेगिस्तान (Desert) के नामों से पहले-
The Suez Canal
The Panama Canal
The Sahara Desert
The Thar Desert
Rule -7
रेलगाड़ी, हवाई जहाज व समुद्री जहाजों के नाम से पहले जैसे-
The Rajdhani Express
The Statabdi Express
The Titanic
The Vikrant
The Airbus 380
Rule -8
किसी धर्मिक पुस्तक, ग्रंथ व महागाथाओं से पहले। जैसे-
The Geeta
The Bible
The Quran
The Ramayana
The Mahabharata
किन्तु यदि लेखक का नाम पहले जुड़ा हो तो ‘the’ का प्रयोग नहीं करते। जैसे-
Valmiki’s
Ramayana

किसी धर्मिक सम्प्रदाय से पहले। जैसे-

Superlative degree से पहले’
The tallest,
The best,

सशस्त्र सेनाओं के नामों से पहले जैसे-

राजनीतिक दलों से पहले-

ऐतिहासिक काल, ऐतिहासिक इमारत, ऐतिहासिक घटना, वंश आदि से पहले-
The Russian Revolution
The Victorian age.
The Mughal Empire.
The Khalzi Dynasty
The Battle of waterloo.
The Qutub Minar.
The Taj Mahal.
Rule -14
ऐसी वस्तु से पहले जो अपने आप में अनूठी हो जैसे-
The Earth
The Sun
The Moon
The Equator
Rule -15
अखबारों व विख्यात पत्रिकाओं के नाम से पहले जैसे-
The Times of India
The Indian Express
The Wisden
The Femina
